The fire fighter

Travis and Ryan are working on a statue in downtown Elkton in memory of Emmett (Thomas) Kuehl, the fallen fire fighter who lost his life in the line of duty at the age of 38. One of the thoughts that comes to my mind when I think of Emmett is him driving the ambulance at top speed to the Flandreau hospital with my 89-year-old mother. I have to say I was fearful that maybe that might just be the last time I would see my mother alive. It never crossed my mind that the young driver, Emmett, would be the one leaving this world not long after that while he was responding to a fire.

Chad loves being in the field

Just by the look on Chad's face, one knows what he loves to do. He spends the year talking, planning, and looking forward to this time of the year. This year, however, a few weeks after the hunting season opened, Chad fell and broke his hip. That put an end to his walking the fields for a while.

A farmer's daughter

After talking a few minutes with Shari about farming, one realizes that this young lady did not get her farm knowledge from a text book. It had to come from personal hands-on experience. One just does not know the best way to help a cow that is having trouble calving or how to treat mastitis without hands-on experience. She has to be a farmer's daughter.

Spraying the fence line

Rufus is out hand spraying the fence line. The weeds were especially bad this year, and some of them got a little head start. Rufus wanted to spray them with the tractor and sprayer, but he was concerned about the spray drifting into the bean field, so he played it safe and did it by hand.

Austin attends FFA Convention

Austin is showing one of his pure-bred bucks. He feels as much at home in this pen as most kids do playing with their dogs in the back yard. In October, Austin attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis with other FFA members.
